These three things should be present at any marina charging competitive rates. If any of them are missing or unreliable, keep shopping.

Most boats 25 to 40 feet run on 30-amp service; boats over 40 feet typically need 50-amp; larger yachts may need dual 50-amp or 100-amp. Ask whether power is included in the slip rate or metered separately β it matters.
- 2. Potable water at the slip. A freshwater spigot at each slip is standard. Confirm that it is actually drinkable and not just wash-down water. Low water pressure or a marina that shuts off water overnight can be a real inconvenience for liveaboards.

Facility Amenities
The shore-side facilities are where marinas either shine or fall flat. These two separate the pros from the amateurs.
- 8. Clean restrooms and showers. Heated, well-lit, properly ventilated bathrooms with hot showers are the foundation of a good marina. The largest boat at the marina tells you the biggest lift size they can work with.
- 14. Winter storage or hurricane haul-out. In seasonal markets, on-site winter storage means you don't have to trailer your boat across town. In hurricane-prone regions, a haul-out plan and a plan B for named storms is essential.
Community
- 15. Social space and events. A club room, a covered pavilion, or just a well-used fire pit and picnic area is where the marina community actually forms. Marinas with regular events β docktails, potlucks, fishing tournaments, Fourth of July cookouts β tend to have happier tenants and longer waitlists for a reason.
Amenity Tiers by Price Point
Not every marina needs every amenity on this list. Here's what you can reasonably expect at each price tier:
- Basic ($8 to $15 per foot per month). Power, water, restrooms, and a gate. Possibly a pump-out. Often no ship's store, no fuel, limited staffing. Fine for weekend boaters who don't need extras.
- Mid-range ($15 to $30 per foot per month). Everything in basic plus fuel dock, pump-out, laundry, ship's store, Wi-Fi, and usually a mechanic on call. This is the sweet spot for most boaters.
- Premium ($30+ per foot per month). Full-service yard, pool, restaurant, concierge services, 24/7 security, courtesy cars or shuttle service, and amenities aimed at the liveaboard and yacht crowd. Worth it only if you actually use the extras.
What to Skip If You're Budgeting
If you're trying to keep slip costs down, here's where you can reasonably cut. A pool is nice but rarely worth more than $50 to $100 per month in added cost β skip it if you don't swim. A restaurant on-site is a bonus, not a need. Concierge services, courtesy cars, and clubhouse bars are lifestyle features that add real cost. Covered slips run 20 to 40 percent more than open slips and are only worth it in climates where UV damage or hail is a constant concern.
What you should never cut: reliable power, clean water, working restrooms, a pump-out plan, and basic security. Saving $200 a month by cutting any of those evaporates the first weekend you spend miserable on your boat.
